"Any organization that claims its people are its greatest asset, then fails to develop genuine, practical Upstream Gratitude in its leaders for that "greatest asset", is inviting cynicism, distrust and "hold back", and very likely pushing skilled people out the door."
Organizations can mandate expressions of gratitude, but only people can be grateful for other people. The SHARE (or expression) is not where the real power is found. Learning to SEE and SEARCH is what develops the kind of leader that can fully maximize the gifts, skills and efforts of any team!
In fact, research shows that any expression (SHARE) prompted by an organizational mandate or made possible by an organizational program is being automatically discounted by employees if it doesn't match what they're already experiencing from their direct leader/manager. Sadly, most organizations are operationalizing expressions of gratitude, not gratitude itself! And the costs are significant!
Organizations spend significant amounts of money developing skills and competencies in their people, then systematically drive them away, or at a minimum invite "hold back", by placing them under the leadership of people that don't effectively value them, who they are and what they have to offer. So much of that value and the desire to lend it to the team remains tragically unseen, unused.
The successful leader maximizes the power, gifts and effort of its people by inviting "all in". A leader that Leads Gratefully sees and correctly values the skills, gifts and effort of team members. And only when a gift or skill is seen and properly valued can it be successfully leveraged to its fullest for the team's benefit.
Genuine, powerful Upstream Gratitude permeates every interaction with a team member. It is not an event, a phrase or physical token of some sort. But it's also not just a smile or being nice. And it's never simply about choosing the right words so people stop feeling unappreciated or undervalued.
Upstream, genuine gratitude can be developed with a combination of greater self-awareness and powerful development tools that are easy to deploy and sustain.
Your organization's "greatest asset" not only deserves to be properly appreciated, but in our day and age, it is increasingly essential that they are!
Fortunately, Upstream Gratitude can - must - be developed! It's what we do!
Over the past 20 years, Dave has worked with and trained thousands of leaders around the globe and has spoken to many more about developing leaders that invite "all-in" from their team members. From Fortune 100 companies to small dynamic businesses, universities to local school districts, federal government agencies to local municipalities and non-profits, as well as military and law enforcement, Dave has worked with them all developing leaders that both the organization and its employees both need and deserve. It's time for gratitude to move from the needlepoint wall hanging to the board room and to be recognized as the leadership essential that it is in the 21st century.
We work with leaders to help them see the extent to which they are currently leading gratefully or ungratefully, then provide a practical approach to improve.
Our frameworks and self-awareness exercises help them to discover the existing costs of where they are within the Entitlement/Ignorance Matrix and how to fully charge the "all-in" three-cell batteries (See-Feel-Do) of their team members and themselves!
The power is found in UPSTREAM GRATITUDE!
It's incredible what can be accomplished in a single speech. People not only leave energized and committed to approach the people they lead much more effectively, but they see life through a new invigorating lens!
And when it's time to get to work to implement and sustain Leading Gratefully, our standard half-day workshop (3.5 hours of content, exercises, activities) will do just that. A more customized full-day workshop further adapts to the people, culture, needs and structure of your organization.
Whether you're looking for more info about a speech, a workshop or anything else, we're eager to hear from you!
